Successful cases
Digital media monitoring platform from a gender perspective:
We have developed a gender observatory capable of measuring continuously, systematically and on a large scale the presence of women and men in digital news media. This tool automatically analyses the news published in digital media in the Basque Country and provides the main indicators from a gender perspective: the presence of women and men in general, by section, as protagonists, in the most important news stories, and the people with the greatest presence.
Digital media monitoring platform from a gender perspective:
Overview
We have developed a gender observatory capable of measuring continuously, systematically and on a large scale the presence of women and men in digital news media. This tool automatically analyses the news published in digital media in the Basque Country and provides the main indicators from a gender perspective: the presence of women and men in general, by section, as protagonists, in the most important news stories, and the people with the greatest presence.
Challenge
The international Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) project proposes standard indicators for measuring the presence of women in the media. To measure most of these indicators it is necessary to understand the content of the news articles and, up to now, the calculations have been done manually. In this project, neural approaches were developed to automatically measure these indicators. These techniques will allow the large-scale and systematic measurement of women in the media.
Collaboration
It was developed in collaboration with Emakunde (Basque Institute for Women, Basque Government).
Result
We have created a platform that monitors digital media from the gender perspective. Using a set of indicators, the system measures the presence of women and men in the media, and enables the results to be consulted through graphs, tables and filters.
