Netflix Disney+
The aim of this project is to assess the language coverage of the content offered on VOD and streaming platforms in Europe. The study used the catalogues of the Netflix and Disney+ platforms to identify and compare the audio and subtitle languages of the content available in 17 countries.

Overview

The aim of this project is to assess the language coverage of the content offered on VOD and streaming platforms in Europe. The study used the catalogues of the Netflix and Disney+ platforms to identify and compare the audio and subtitle languages of the content available in 17 countries.

Challenge

To systemically extract the catalogue and language information from each platform, organise them by country and title and unify the linguistic codes and different variants used by both platforms. The audio and subtitle content were also separated, taking into account the different variants in relation to accessibility.

Collaboration

It was developed in collaboration with the EHU’s research group NOR.

Result

The project resulted in a structured database that allows assessment of the linguistic offer of the VOD platforms. This database has been developed to compile, unify and assess information on the current audio and subtitle languages in the catalogues of the Netflix and Disney+ platforms available in 17 countries. This provided a starting point to comparably study the presence of the different languages and accessibility options of each platform.
